Beginning of the 'Lasts'

As we're coming to the end of living in lovely St. Kitts, I find myself thinking about our very last parties, our very last snorkeling adventure, our very last beach trip to Gong, our very last everything. I'm all, "Oooh this is the last time we'll go to..." or, "Gahh! I can't believe this is Trooper's last island haircut." I think I even said something about buying butter for the last time at IGA a few days ago...to which Matthew rolled his eyes and ignored me. Typical.

Anyway, I guess this is your warning that you're in for a lot of whiny and pouty posts about 'last' something. On that note, let's get started!

For the last two years, Matthew and I have gone down to The Strip to either play or watch beach volleyball every Friday. I can only think of a few times where we didn't make it...and I can't imagine what was more important than going to the beach in the afternoon to hang out with our friends, and drink waaaay too much beer. Yep, no idea.

So yes, you probably saw this coming, but I feel the need to tell you that last Friday was our very last beach volleyball event! Gahhhh so sad. However, we enjoyed too many buckets of Stag beer, a bonfire, and I even had my picture taken with a donkey!

Very last Friday beach volleyball. *sigh*

Me and my new friend.

I sure hope Raleigh will provide me with lots of activities to aid in my post-island-life-depression...

Beneath the Moon and Stars

A couple of weeks ago, I made plans to take Matty on a little adventure. One of the professors at RUSVM takes groups for stand up paddleboarding trips every month when the moon is full. (I believe that he also takes other groups during the daytime.) Since we don't have much time left in St. Kitts, I decided that this was something we should try to fit into our schedules before we leave. I mean, who knows when the next chance to do something like this will be?

We met our group down at The Strip on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. Once we figured out the logistics, we piled into our cars and headed to Whitehouse Bay to begin our night time fun. Matthew and I have never paddleboarded before, so I won't lie—I was a little nervous. I wasn't sure if I'd have the balance, and I definitely didn't want to fall in. You know...because it's dark out. And we're in the ocean. However, Dr. Spac gave us a short, but helpful tutorial and sent us on our way with glow sticks. And guess what?! Matty and I did a pretty good job; we were able to keep up with our group and we never fell in. Thank the lord! (I highly doubt something awful would happen, but you just never know what's swimming below you...muhahaha.) ;)

It took us about 1.5 hours to paddleboard from Whitehouse Bay all the way to The Strip. The moon guided our way, and it was beautiful to see the moonlight illuminating SK's rolling hills and lush landscape. At one point, we were able to sit on our boards as the current pulled us in, which was nice because we could finally relax a bit, and enjoy the beautiful view of the big bright moon and the shining stars, (without losing balance and risking a fall-in).

I didn't bring my camera because it isn't water-proof, but Bess was kind enough to bring hers and take a few pics.

We made it!

The entire trip was incredible, and I definitely recommend it!

Halloween 2012

Happy {belated} Halloweenie! I doubt you remember last year's shenanigans, but we had a great time celebrating the holiday in St. Kitts. Since it was our first Halloween on-island, I wasn't sure what to expect, but we managed to take part in plenty of festivities. Remember when I entered Trooper into that pet costume contest and dressed him as a postal worker? Or when I went to all that trouble to sew my own mermaid tail so that Matty and I could dress as a fisherman and his 'catch of the day?' We also opted to carve a pineapple instead of a pumpkin, (which was really easy). And lastly, we were invited to a Halloween event at Carambola Beach Club with Matt and Tiffany. Needless to say, it was an eventful holiday and just as fun as a typical Halloween in the U.S.A.

This year was equally as enjoyable as last year! The Saturday before Halloween, Matty and I joined our friends at Buddies for trivia night. We got a team together and tried our best, but we didn't manage to pull out a win. *sigh* OH! AND! There was a trivia question regarding my all-time favorite Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus. It asked what the cat's name was, to which I answered: Zachery Binx. WRONG! The answer is Thackery Binx. I am so disappointed in myself. Woe is me.

Moving on...there was also a zombie bar crawl at The Strip that evening, but we didn't partake in that event. However, those people ended up at Buddies for the after party, and there were some really creepy-looking zombies. I loved it!

NC State's upcoming wolf pack @ Buddies.

On the actual night of Halloween, Daisy and I headed to Shipwreck Beach Bar & Grill. We met up with a few other VIPs and began—what would be—a very long night. There was dj music, drinks, and lots of dancing. Need I say more? We had a BLAST! When we eventually left the beach, we drove all the way back to Camps, (where Daisy lives), to pick up Ericka so we could go to Bamboo Lounge for more drinks and really bad karaoke. That party was kind of lame, but at that point in the night, I don't think I really noticed. Hehe.

We didn't plan on dressing up, but I brought these props just for fun and just in case!

I'm not sure where the boys got a hold of this unicorn costume piece...but I loved it!

On Saturday, November 3rd, Matty and I went to a Haunted House Halloween party with our friends. The best part about it, was that we could walk to the party, due to the fact that the host lives in front of us. And that's when the responsible drinking began...

I didn't take a tour through the haunted house because I'm a scaredy cat, but I heard it was really cool and legit scary! Oh! And how could I forget to tell you all about our costumes? Wait for it...

You ready?

Okay...

I dressed as a Toddlers & Tiaras' Contestant...and Matty was my 'stage dad.' Hilarious right? I thought so. A lot of people thought it was creepy, but that's the point. It's Halloween!

Oh yeah. Check us out! Matty has skittles and red bull in his hands. Baby needs her go-go juce!

Me and Daisy. (She was a fairy. Check out that tutu. Cute right?)

I already had the shoes...Daisy found the socks.

Well, that's the Halloween update. Just like last year, we had wayyyy too much fun. Now that it's over, I guess I better start thinking about next year's costumes...

Stacey Visits Saint Kitts

I met my friend, Stacey, at Grand Valley State University in 2003. We lived next door to each other in the teeny tiny dorms on-campus, and became fast friends. Almost ten years later, we've maintained our college-initiated friendship, with quite a lovely history---if you ask me. We've been roommates, involved in each other's weddings as bridesmaids, and we've even worked together. However, these days we're forced to watch each other grow and experience life from afar...literally.

After Stacey was married, she and her husband moved to Ohio, bought a house, and had a baby. A few years after Matthew and I were married, we up and moved to the Caribbean. While our lives have gone in completely different directions, it's always been easy for us to pick up wherever it was we last left off. So, when Stacey said she was planning on coming to visit me in St. Kitts, I was ecstatic! I hadn't seen her since New Year's Day 2011. I was really looking forward to reconnecting and catching up with her. And that we did!

She arrived on a Wednesday afternoon, and Matthew and I met her at the airport. Unfortunately, I had to go to work from 2:30-5:00 p.m., so I had to part ways shortly after our initial reunion. But don't worry—Matty kept her busy during the few hours I was away, showing her around, and giving her a brief tour. Once I arrived home, I made dinner, and we spent the evening catching up. We chatted about everything: work, school, family, friends, neighbors, sports, books, movies, current likes and dislikes—you name it. It was a great start to her vacation, at least for me. :)

On Thursday, we spent some time at my friend's gorgeous infinity pool, and later that night we brought Stacey to Bombay Blues for her first Indian cuisine experience. Of course, we ordered her the butter chicken, bismati rice, and butter naan. NOM NOM NOM.

Friday was a busy day, but definitely fun. I brought her to Caribelle Batik at Romney Manor, Palm Court Gardens, Port Zante in Basseterre, and The Strip (for Friday night beach volleyball). We rounded out the night at Reggae Beach Bar for Lobsterfest, where we dined on lobsters the size of our arms!

Saturday was spent at Shipwreck Beach. We soaked up some vitamin D, went snorkeling, and enjoyed the beautiful island views. That night, even though semi-exhausted, we decided to head over to The Marriott. After the tour, we sat at the sports bar and enjoyed a few Caribbean beers, along with the live Calypso-esque music. We also took part in one of our all-time favorite activities: PEOPLE WATCHING. Free entertainment at its best, folks.

On Sunday, Stacey joined me and Matthew at our intramural flag football games. And she even participated! Afterwards, I drove her out to the peninsula to Spice Mill Restaurant. We had lunch, and then admired a lovely view of Nevis while out on our beach chairs. We had a late start to our 'beach day,' but it was still very enjoyable.

Monday was sad. It was sad because she flew off de island that day. But before I dropped her off at the airport and choked back my tears, we enjoyed one last lunch date at the The Marriott's Bohemia Beach Pool Bar & Grille. We even kicked off our shoes, and walked on the beach for a bit.

After lunch, we went back home, and I helped her pack. Then the inevitable arrived, and I had to bring her to the airport. It was a quick goodbye because I couldn't handle much more than a hug and a wave. I sobbed on my way home. Stacey coming all the way to St. Kitts to visit meant so much, and it was like having a small piece of 'home' with me for a few days. I loved being able to show her around, as well as introduce her to our island family and closest friends. We definitely squeezed in a ton of quality time, and I couldn't have been happier. What a blast!

April Update

When people ask me, "What's new," or "What have you been up to," it always takes me a minute to respond. Not because I don't have anything exciting on my schedule, but because life sometimes becomes such a routine that you don't always exam your day, week, month—or in our case---semester. However, April has recently 'showered' me with new changes, so here's the update.

Update 1: This past semester, I've been volunteering at the RUSVM Preparatory School teaching Arts & Crafts on Wednesday afternoons. I've taught 4th graders and up how to crochet, make friendship bracelets, stitch fabric flowers, and create accessories like necklaces, bracelets, and headbands. It's been a great experience and I'm happy to have shared some of my 'artsy' knowledge with more-than-willing students. It's been enjoyable getting to know the girls and seeing their creativity blossom. Today was my last session, but I will see most of them again in June when I start working full-time for summer camp. I'll resume my role as the Arts & Crafts teacher, and I'm really looking forward to the projects that Emily I have planned for them.

Update 2: Tiffany and I had been running consistently since mid-to-late January...until I started noticing a very uncomfortable, wrenching pain on the outsides of my calves---that would not go away. Unfortunately, I have no idea what's wrong with me, but eventually it got to a point where I couldn't run more than a half mile. And that's pretty damn depressing and frustrating when you've been routinely running three or more miles a day, five to six days a week. However, I've had running issues in the past. When I was in high school, and ran cross country my senior year, I often experienced pain on the outsides of my knees and numb feet which resulted in me missing out on several races. Annoying. Again, when Matty and I were training for a 10K in 2009, training stopped short because of the calf pain. Coincidentally, I have never had problems playing soccer or basketball. Talk about frustrating. Anyway, running and I have temporarily split up until I can get new running shoes, (they've expired). I have an inkling that my running form could be the culprit too. I try to run heel-toe, heel-toe, but my feet have a mind of their own and want to land on the outsides of my feet first...and then heel...and then toe. The bottom line is that running is the simplest form of exercise and it drives me bonkers to think that I can't run a 5k without problems. Absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention that Tiffany and I were good running buddies. We kept each other motivated...okay let's be serious here---she's way more motivating than I am. But I feel that I'm leaving her on out a limb now that I'm on hiatus. Good thing she's got great self-discipline to carry her through until I can get my shit together, and get back in the game.

Update 3: Sundays were for soccer and flag football, which have both recently come to a close, due to finals week looming steadily ahead. During our soccer tournament we won our first game, but lost our second. In addition, my flag football team lost the first game in the playoffs, but Matthew's team is headed to the championship game which is this Friday. Go Black Semester!

Update 4: Trivia-Night-Tuesdays have been a nice way to change up my evening activities. Last year, I fell out of attending on a regular basis because it's also 10EC-movie-night, and that often won over going to trivia. However, when Stephanie arrived on-island and showed an avid interest in going, I was inspired to start going again. Since then, I've faithfully attend every Tuesday, even though I'm clearly not the MVP...ever. BUT—I have actually hosted three times this past semester! Imagine that. Me...the quiz master. Muahahhahaa. To be fair, I have previously split up the work with Stephanie twice and Tiffany once. Coming up with 60 questions and six different categories is a little daunting, but when you have someone to split it with you, it's a lot more manageable.

Update 5: Wednesday evenings used to be for karaoke at Bobsy's, but sadly, I haven't gone in a very long time. It was a nice night to meet up with the VIP Ladies of Leisure, but Bobsy's hasn't been too busy lately. Not to mention The Blue Martini, SoBe, and Club One have all closed down, so when you get tired of karaoke, there's nowhere else to go to get some dancing in. *sigh*

Update 6: Spanish classes have recently resumed, on Thursday evenings at 5:00 p.m. in Basseterre at the Venezuelan Institute. Speaking of which...I should probably sit down and condense my notes so that I can be prepared for our upcoming vacation to Puerto Rico. (More about that later.) Thursdays are also when I meet with my friend, Esther, to work on her English. She is from Taiwan and our weekly meetings have become something I really enjoy and look forward to. It's fun to compare cultures, interpret we spoiled Americans, examine the funny English language, and share island stories. Last week she made me homemade sushi...and it was to-die-for. Matthew is lucky that I didn't gobble up the entire roll before he arrived home from school. DAMN. I am such a good wife.

Update 7: Beach Volleyball games are on Friday, like usual. Heather, another VIP, is captain of our team, but her spouse is currently in 7th semester, so they are heading back to the US in a matter of weeks. Heather kindly asked if I would carry on the torch, and I accepted. So now I'm the boss. ;)

Update 8: Kristen, Matthew's fellow classmate, recently asked me to join her basketball team which is part of the SKABA, (St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association). Now this is a change worth noting, mostly because I have not played a competitive basketball game in about a decade. My friend, Hope, also joined the team and is in a similar boat. However, we had our first game tonight, and while our team lost, I'd say Hope and I hustled pretty well for a couple of old ladies who haven't touched a basketball in damn near ten years! Thankfully, because of all the running, soccer-ing, and flag football-ing, I didn't feel too out of shape. It is, however, funny to note how playing different sports affects your body. With running or swimming, I feel like I have all the time in the world. I can just keep a steady pace and keep on trucking along. Mostly it's a mental game---how far can I really run today? How many laps should I swim? With flag football, there isn't a ton of running around, unless of course, you're sprinting, but you have to be alert, quick at grabbing flags, anticipating passes, be ready to catch the ball, and be okay with getting knocked around. Soccer is a different story...lots more cardio involved. The field is large, with plenty of room to roam. I feel like I can control my pace a little bit, but you still need to be able to cover your player, run fast, control the ball, make accurate passes, score goals, head the ball, etc. And then there's basketball, which I put into a similar category. Dribble. Drive. Shoot. Pass. Jump. Don't get beat. Turn. Anticipate. Repeat. It's a fast-paced game and very unpredictable at times which makes it enjoyable for me. Couldn't be happier to be playing on Kristen's team, especially when I've had to stop running daily.

And a funny photo to add to my basketball rant:

Update 9: Matthew recently received an email indicating that U.C. Davis is now accepting RUSVM students for clinicals, which is really exciting news. I don't want to speak too soon, but I think we may have found our third preference for clinical year. The other two are Oregon State University and Louisiana State University.

Update 10: Matthew and I are heading to Puerto Rico in T minus 16 days for a mini vacation, and I am so very excited. I am really looking forward to exploring Old San Juan, shopping at the largest mall in the Caribbean, and going on a kayaking tour to experience the sights of a bioluminescent lagoon. Praying for on-time flights and beautiful weather!

So those are the updates...a bit wordy, I know.

BBQ for Elvis

About a week ago, Matthew and I---along with many other RUSVM students---attended one last event for Elvis. You could purchase tickets for the bbq, buy drinks at the bar until the stock was depleted, Love Shack t-shirts were for sale, and there was a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses. Stephanie and her husband Rob were two separate raffle winners. Lucky ducks! Anyway, all proceeds went directly to Elvis' family for memorial expenses.

It was a very successful event, and it was great to see so many of our friends coming out to support Elvis' family.

Looks like a beautiful day for a bbq in honor of our friend, Elvis.

Gathering for Elvis

Last Friday we heard the unfortunate news that we lost a much-loved man of Saint Kitts. Elvis, former owner of Elvis' Loveshack on The Strip at Timothy's Beach, was a victim of a senseless violent act conducted by a local Kittitian.

Because of the terrible news, our weekly volleyball matches were rightfully cancelled, as we all held very heavy hearts. In an effort to comfort each other and pay our respects, a lot of us went down to Elvis' bar for a few hours anyway. We gathered around a bonfire, watched the sunset, and shared memories of our dear friend.

In the background, you can see students/spouses writing their goodbyes to Elvis.

Words for Elvis. (This photo was not taken by me; it was circulating on Facebook, but I did edit it with Instagram.)

Elvis

It's a dark day on the island. I woke up to texts, phone calls, Facebook updates, and official news stating that our much loved friend, Elvis, was shot last night. Owner of Elvis' Love Shack on The Strip, he happily welcomed Ross students and spouses---any day or night of the week. We all loved him. And now our hearts are broken.

Greg, a Ross student and friend, posted the following as his Facebook status update. I thought it was really heartfelt, so I wanted to share it.

January 20, 2012, 10:00 a.m.
G: ...You not opening up yet?
E: Not until this afternoon. Nobody here 'til then.
G: But isn't there a ship in? I saw tourists walking around this morning.
E: Eh tourists...man. Nah, the students, ya'll are my people.

RIP, Elvis. You were a favorite among our Ross community. Saint Kitts will not be the same without you, and my heart goes out to your family.

Elvis is in the red shirt, posing with a ton of VIPs. This party was held for our former VIP Coordinator, Lindsay, next to him in the blue.

We love you, Elvis! You are deeply missed!
This was taken last January, when I first arrived on the island. Elvis always took great care in looking after we spouses.

Happy NYE and Happy NY!

Matthew is an Orientation Leader again this break, and his group of newbies flew in on December 29th. Needless to say, he's been busy getting them adjusted to island life, all while making sure they still have a good time. Since the students didn't have anything school-related on their schedules until yesterday, January 3rd, they were able to explore, beach it, and enjoy the island with little stress.

We brought them to The Strip to ring in the new year. A lot of other groups went there too, so it was nice to celebrate with a large crowd.

Me and Tiffany.
